6 Golf Clothing & Gear Tips for Unpredictable Weather

Every year it’s the same thing: winter far overstays its welcome, reaching its long, cold tendrils well into April. We can all agree spring is "supposed" to be for golf, and for good golfing conditions; plus, it’s nice to have warm weather! Well, sunnier days are headed our way. But for now, we have to prepare ourselves to dress for the weather on any given day this spring.

Mother Nature may be unpredictable, but being prepared means we can embrace any chance to get out on the course – provided we’re dressed properly. Here are some tips:

1. Wear layers: This is a must if you want to be prepared for very cold temps in the morning, followed by a warm-up in the early afternoon. Wear pants over shorts, and a long or short sleeve tee or thermal t-shirt under a sweater. This way, you don’t have to waste a trip to the club house to change. Just peel-off one layer and keep going.

2. Carry hand warmers: They’ll help your feel/grip and they’re cheap. Just stuff them in your pockets and warm up your hands between shots. Remember, the most vital part of your swing is your grip, and you can’t get a good one if you have cold hands.

3. Walk rather than ride (at the Golf Shop's discretion): Keep your heart rate up, work up a sweat, and burn off calories all at the same time. Plus, this will prevent your muscles from stiffening up.

4. Come prepared: Bring an umbrella, rain coat and shoe coverings, even if it’s not raining yet. If there’s even a hint of it in the forecast, keep this stuff in your bag. You’ll thank yourself later when it starts sprinkling 10 holes in. Wear waterproof shoes and a windbreaker. Don’t forget towels (large ones) and a rain hood for your clubs, says Golf

5. Wear extra socks: Cold feet can quickly turn a fun golf outing miserable. By doubling up on socks, you’ll prevent frozen pinky toes.

6. Make sure your golf ball stays warm: It’s a fact that balls don’t soar as far in cool weather, causing you to lose between three and five yards for every 10-degree decrease in the temperature. The ball should stay snugly within your pocket as you walk from hole to hole.
